Since a favorite childhood friend is Winnie the Pooh, cake designs featuring this loveable bear are perfect for a baby's first birthday or any kid or kid-at-heart's celebration. From simple cake pans to elaborate tiered cakes, options for the roly-poly bear will suit any decorator's skill level.
Pooh Bear Cakes
Winnie the Pooh is a great subject for any child or Disney-lover's birthday cake. In fact, he is such a popular subject that the Wilton cake decorating company has created a special Pooh icing color set. Purchase gold or dark yellow and mix with orange to achieve the color of Pooh's fur if you do not want to buy the set.
Sitting Bear
Individually sized "smash" cakes are popular at first birthday parties, and many children and adults would enjoy a personal sized Pooh cake. Create a sitting Pooh Bear cake as a smash or individual cake by using a stand-up Winnie the Pooh cake pan set or a stand-up teddy bear pan.
A sitting bear is also easy to make using stacked cupcakes. Stack two regularly sized cupcakes on top of one another, with the cupcake tops in the center to create the round tummy of pooh. Add a rounded mini cupcake to the top. Shape further if necessary, and then pipe buttercream onto the cupcakes in Pooh's color. Add a red shirt and eyes, nose and mouth with black piping gel. Build up ears with frosting. Use the black gel to create lines indicating that Pooh's arms are folded over in front of his shirt and pipe hands. Create legs on the cake board.
Pooh's Face
Bake a single layer round cake and three regular sized cupcakes. Place the cupcakes at the top of the cake to resemble ears, carving slightly so they fit along the curve of the larger round cake. Put the third cupcake on top of the single cake layer for a nose, sculpting with a serrated knife if necessary. Attach with a thin layer of buttercream frosting.Make a batch of buttercream frosting. Pipe black outlines on the cake for the nose, eyes, mouth. Fill in the whites of the eyes with white buttercream in a small star tip. Tint a small amount of the icing black and fill in the pupils of the eyes, the nose and mouth. Color the rest of the frosting to match Pooh's fur and pipe stars around the rest of the cake.
Disney Shaped Pan
Purchase or borrow a Disney character cake pan in the shape of Winnie the Pooh to make the cake design. Follow the enclosed cake decorating instructions or simply follow along the impressions in the pan. Shaped pans make it easy to create Winnie the Pooh, even if you are only a novice decorator.
Winnie the Pooh Cake Designs
Create a Winnie the Pooh cake design that incorporates several of his friends by making a tiered cake. Cut character shapes out of fondant and paint to resemble the bear and his friends with edible paint. Place the characters around each layer.
For a more adult take on Winnie the Pooh, make a layered cake and cover in red rolled fondant. Then tint more fondant in the color of Pooh's fur and use a cookie cutter to cut out the shape of Pooh. Place Pooh around the cake tiers for a simple yet sophisticated design.
Make a fun novelty cake by creating a scene with Winnie the Pooh on top of a large round, square or rectangular cake. Frost the top half of the cake in sky blue and the bottom half in grass green. Use cake decorating supplies, like character figurines, to represent Pooh and friends in the Hundred Acre Woods.
Classic Pooh Cakes
The look of classic Pooh is still popular today. An easy way to make a classic pooh cake is to create a piping gel transfer of Pooh from a children's coloring book. Simply trace the figure onto a piece of waxed paper, and then flip over and trace the tracing with clear piping gel. Place the wax paper with the piping gel face down on a sheet cake and then pipe Pooh in using a paler shade of the modern Winnie the Pooh.
Children's characters are a fabulous subject for any children's cake design and Winnie the Pooh is no exception. Try one of the ideas above or share your own.
